Born in Chicago in 1954, Sandra Cisneros grew up in a large
family: two parents and six brothers. She graduated with a degree in English from
Loyola University of Chicago in 1976. She earned her Masters of Fine Arts in
Writing from the prestigious University of Iowa Writers' Workshop two years
later. She has published numerous novels, short stories, and poems, but remains
best known for this work, The House on Mango Street, first published in
1984. "The Chicago-born author's first novel is her most critically acclaimed
work. In subsequent works Cisneros would continue to use the simple, almost
childlike narrative voice developed here to tell the story of a young Chicana
writer" (Chronology of American Literature). Cisneros currently lives in
San Antonio, Texas.
