Chapter 15

Janie soon learns what it feels like to be jealous. A girl named Nunkie flirts rather shamelessly with Tea Cake; in fact, she catches the two of them wrestling in a cane field, and Tea Cake is embarrassed. When they're back home, she accuses him of cheating, which he denies. They have a heated argument; it turns into a physical confrontation, which turns into a passionate embrace. The next morning, she asks, "You still love ole Nunkie?" He said he'd never wanted her to begin with, and only wanted to be with Janie: "You'se something tuh make uh man forgit tuh git old and forgit tuh die."
