Chapter 6

Chapter 6 - Hungry Joe
Hungry Joe is a nervous wreck of a man, constantly on the edge of insanity. Every time he reaches the maximum number of missions, he waits for the orders to come in that will send him home. He does this in a state of extreme anxiety, as he worries that the maximum number of missions will be raised before the orders arrive, which, invariably they do. Thus, he is only at ease when he is actually under the required number of missions and putting himself in danger. When he is out of danger, waiting for his release orders to come in, he is miserable.

In this chapter, the reader also learns more about Chief White Halfoat. He apparently threatened his ex-roommate Captain Flume, saying he would sneak over and slit Flume's throat while he slept. As a result, Flume attempts to stay awake as late as possible each night. Though he actually falls asleep quite quickly, he dreams that he is staying awake, and wakes up exhausted each morning.

In a conversation between Yossarian and ex-PFC Wintergreen, the issue of Catch-22 is raised again, though in a different vein. Yossarian remarks that Colonel Cathcart's required fifty missions is not mandated by his superiors at 27th Air Force Headquarters. Thus, because HQ outranks Cathcart, the 40 missions that are mandated by them should be the only rule that applies. Wintergreen, however, reminds Yossarian that if he did not acknowledge Cathcart's rules, HQ would jump on him for disobeying a superior officer.
