Chapter 42

Chapter 42 - Yossarian
Major Danby, the kind-hearted operations officer, appears in the hospital to tell Yossarian that "the deal is still on" according to Colonel Korn. Yossarian, by this time, has decided not to go through with the deal. Danby argues with Yossarian that he must accept the deal, explaining how every other option is unacceptable. Yossarian agrees that there is no easy way out, and seems unsure how to proceed.

The conversation is interrupted by the Chaplain, who runs in screaming that they'd received word that Orr was safe. After being shot down, he apparently rowed to neutral Sweden using the inflatable escape raft. There he will remain interned until the end of the war.

Suddenly it is all clear to Yossarian that Orr had planned an escape to Sweden all along. All those time Orr was shot down, realizes Yossarian, he was just practicing. Yossarian marvels at how Orr pretended to be a stupid and nave, all the while calculating and thinking. Yossarian attracted attention from the start, because he acted intelligent; but Orr was able to plan his escape without notice, under the guise of a half-witted country boy.

Yossarian also understands why Orr was being hit over the head by the prostitute in Rome that time. Because, he tells the Chaplain, he was paying her to! He wanted to get hurt-but she didn't hit him hard enough. Elated, inspired, and energized, Yossarian gets his belongings together and resolves to make for Sweden. He'll begin by getting to Rome and figuring it out from there. Danby wishes him luck and gives him money. Yossarian rushes out the door, dodges another attack from Nately's prostitute, and runs off to attempt his escape.
