Chapter 2

Chapter 2 - Clevinger
The author introduces several additional characters in this chapter. At the air base in Pianosa, Italy, Yossarian shares a tent with Orr, a "grinning" pigmy, and his neighbors include Havermeyer, who shoots field mice with a .45; McWatt, who flies his plane low over Yossarian's tent to frighten him; Nately, who has energetically helped build an officer's club at the base; Milo, who is in charge of the mess hall; and Doc Daneeka, the physician who decides when pilots may be taken off combat duty.

The most important character introduced here, however, is Clevinger. Clevinger is a favorite of Yossarian's friend Dunbar, because Dunbar wants to make time go as slowly as possible, and Clevinger is annoying enough to make that happen. As far as the protagonist is concerned, Clevinger believes that Yossarian is crazy. In an argument in the officer's mess, Yossarian states that everybody must be crazy because people are trying to kill him every day for no apparent reason. Clevinger retorts that these people are trying to kill all the pilots every day, but Yossarian does not see how that should make any difference. Using this sort of logic, Yossarian drives Clevinger into a frenzied state of agitation.

The chapter ends with a description of a sumptuous meal at the mess hall prepared by Milo, and Yossarian's sudden exit to ask Doc Daneeka to be relieved from flight duty. Daneeka rejects his request, telling him that the colonel wants fifty missions out of everyone.
