Character List

Principal Characters:

Hester Prynne - the protagonist of the novel who is the wife of Roger Chillingworth. She is a condemned adulteress.

Arthur Dimmesdale - the minister of Hester's church.and the faterh of Pearl

Roger Chillingworth - Hester's husband physician who has sent his wife ahead of him to America.

Pearl - the beautiful daughter of Hester and Dimmesdale.

 

Minor Characters:

Governor Bellingham - the governor of the colony. There actually was a governor by that name in Boston.

John Wilson - an older clergyman. The character is based on an actual person who came to Boston in 1630.

Mistress Hibbins - the sister of Governor Bellingham. She is based upon another actual figure from history, who was executed for witchcraft.

The Sexton - a worker in Dimmesdale's church.

The Captain - the commander of the ship that is to take Hester,
Dimmesdale, and Pearl away.
