Comprehensive Summary and Review of Chapters
16-19
Summary:
In the confusion of battle the soldiers hear an officer remark
that many of them will not return, and they realize they are making a hopeless
stand. Henry observes that the delirium of war is heedless and blind. It is
a temporary but sublime absence of selfishness because there is not time to
think of self.
The regiment is halted, fights painfully onward, then stands
indecisive. Henry, seeing the flag, runs toward it, and just as the color
sergeant falls, he and a companion wrench the flag from him.
Review:
With his thoughts of running away behind him, Henry goes on
to fight very bravely and carry the flag for his unit.
The flag - The flag carried during battle is a sign of an armys
place in the battle. It also displayed the courage of the person who had to
carry it since the flag bearer must always stand at the front lines.
