THE MORNING ROUTINE

Following breakfast, prisoners returned briefly to their cells to be counted and then went outside into the recreation yard to assemble for work. Each had his place in a line destined for one of the work areas. Guards took an informal count, accounted for missing inmates, and then marched the crew, a section at a time, to their job assignments.
