A gracious manor house set in acres of magnificent formal gardens combining distinctive gourmet cuisine, superb service, and elegant decor. One of the country's "Must Visit" locations.
When Harry Knowles opened his three-room restaurant in the hills of West Orange on New Year's Eve in 1956, he could not have known then that his dream would culminate in an establishment of which The New York Times said, "It is as close as one can get to perfection."
Bordered by Eagle Rock Reservation and the Montclair Golf Club, The Manor's grounds at one time included cornfields, old gardens, and meadows. The beautiful grounds still yield vegetables and herbs for the chefs, and flowers to enhance the dining experience of guests. Mountain pure water served at The Manor is from a well which has served the house since the turn of the century. Like the English and French country manors, The Manor is self-contained. On-premise studios include those of the coppersmith, silversmith, and upholsterer.
The Manor's own bakery is responsible for it's renowned pastries - so renowed they traveled to Washington for a presidential inauguration!
The Manor has consistently received many awards, a true indication of its quality standards. The nation's business people have bestowed The Manor with the Business Executives Dining Award. From The Wine Spectator, it has garnered the Grand Award. A walk through the lobby will reveal scores of other prestigious awards, among them the coveted DiRoNa and Mobil Four Star awards.
Now a landmark, The Manor has grown into what The Record describes as "a culinary Versailles."
