The year was 1986, the restaurant, J. Sung Dynasty, in the Hotel Lexington. After a successful reign of serving and catering to a demanding New York clientele, Jimmy Sung sold the establishment in 1995. A propitious move, for subsequently, he seized the opportunity to contract for the Peng Teng space, coming full circle.
From the moment you see Jimmy Sung's showy marquee on East 44th Street, and you can step inside the impressive entrance into an inviting wood-paneled bar and lounge, you have the secure feeling of well-being and comfort. Pause for a drink at the bar, and when you are ready, Jimmy Sung himself, or his affable manager will guide you to your table in one of the elegant main dining rooms or one of the seven mall, private dining rooms, so typical of traditional Chinese restaurants. Four dramatic brass peacock fountain chandeliers softly light the rich carpeting, patterned wallpaper, gleaming cherry wood paneling and ornately carved wood arches depicting chrysanthemums, leaves and pine cones.
Celebrating the distinctive cuisines of China, Jimmy Sung's evocative menu presents selections that are the best of each, including many old favorites and new interpretations. Hunam cooking, from the south west, with its hot and spicy flavors will have your mouth watering. Canton, from the south east, presents the essence of Chinese cooking with its light stir-frying techniques and textures. Shanghai, the kitchen of the east, is cosmopolitan and inventive, influenced by foreign tastes. The Manchurian cuisine, from the frigid north, is a combination of Chinese, Japanese, Korean and even Russian flavors.
